The Void Beam is an Alien-only weapon. It looks like a green Thermal Beam and does Alien damage, which cannot be resisted by any shield other than Harmonic Exophase Shields. In addition, like all other weapons used by the Reapers, this weapon has built-in shield bypass, further decreasing the effectiveness of shields. It closely resembles its cousin, the Rift Beam.
Unlike the Rift Beam, this weapon has a much shorter range, but still outranges most player weapons. Its beam duration is also significantly longer than the Rift Beam's.
The Void Beam is primarily used by Alien Reapers. In Reaper Fleets, Reaper Harvester Fleets and Ancient Reaper Fleets, the weapon's long beam duration combined with the extreme maneuverability of the Reapers allow them to continuously fire on a single target while circling it at the same time, greatly increasing the difficulty of shield-switching. In Unknown Aggressors, Void Beam Reapers have very high DPS, destroying Combat Modules in seconds. A single Reaper could take down half of a Combat Module armored with 1x Capacitive Plates III in one firing cycle.
In Co-op Unknown Barrage Harvesters, each Barrage Hive possess 3 Void Beams, which deal great damage to anything that gets in range. Hence, the fleet is ironically best taken down by Exterminator fleets which can outrange the beams, not Decimators.
When shield-switching against the Void Beam, surround the targeted ship with your own ships from all directions. This helps to evenly distribute the damage.
Before the Void Beam Reapers get in range, use squadrons to distract them. The Reapers will waste up to 9 seconds trying to kill the squadrons before starting to fire on your ships.
- The Void Beams appeared for the first time during Vengeance, in Reaper fleets.
