|“||The Photon Gatling fires bursts of high-energy photons that melt everything on contact.||”|
|— Fan-made Description|
|!THIS WEAPON IS UNAVAILABLE TO PLAYERS!|
|Projectile Speed||4,000 m/s|
Its firing cycle is very similar to the Gatling Ray, but has a much longer reload time.
It has low range and can be outranged by many player weapons. However, it deals an incredible amount of damage and has the ability to pierce ships, further multiplying its damage output.
The Photon Gatling appears in Hive Fleets and Large Hive Fleets across numerous events since November 2016. Each Hive has a miniature Unstable Wormhole on top of it, armed with 2 Photon Gatlings. They deal heavy damage to incoming squadrons even after they arrive on top of the Hives, making them much harder to kill using the old carrier strategy.
Alien Harvesters in the recurring event Alien Decimation also carry 2 Photon Gatlings. These cannons are so powerful that they could completely drain a full Metaphase Shield in one firing cycle. Their piercing ability only makes matters worse.
The Photon Gatling's insane DPS and its ability to pierce multiple ships takes shield-switching out of the picture.
The only way to avoid taking massive damage is to stay out of its range as much as possible. Against the Hive Fleets, you could still whittle down the Hives one by one with your squadrons. Battleships armed with Manifold Missile are extremely effective since they could easily outrange the Photon Cannon with the 125% range modifier.
In the case of the Harvesters, blitzing is the only viable option due to the equally deadly Rift Beams which have much longer range. In this case, you should turn on AI mode such that your ships do not move behind each other. This prevents the Photon Cannons from piercing more than one of your ships. Spreading out your ships has the added benefit of allowing some of the shots to miss due to the Photon Gatling's intrinsic spread.
- The Photon Gatling first appeared with the Rift Beams in Large Hive Fleets (65-70) of the November 25th Alien Mobilization.
