Strategy and Setup
Deflector Armor is slightly more efficient than Zynthium against Kinetic weapons. This makes them suitable for ships that engage in long-range combat, in particular destroyers and sniper decoys, due to the fact most of the weapons that have enough range to hit them deal Kinetic Damage, serving to reduce your overall repair time and enhance the survivability of your ships.
Considering equal damage taken from Energy, Explosive and Kinetic sources, Deflector Armor is actually less mass-efficient than Zynthium. It only works if you specialize your ships to only fight against certain types of targets.
To add insult to injury, the XP per health for Deflector Armor is also greater, setting your fleet up to be attacked by stronger ships.
